The Science Behind Portion Control

There is a obesity epidemic and growing around the world.  Many factors contribute to this problem and all it takes is selecting the proper foods and accurate portions for weight loss.

Along with an obesity epidemic, there is an astronomical rise in the Pharmaceutical companies because of prescriptions, medical bills and health insurance needed to be met.  So there is a very strong incentive to staying at a healthy body fat level as well as a normal weight for your height and age.

The selection of healthy foods is very expensive compared to the rapid amount of processed foods being served at such low costs and this has skyrocketed for low income families over the last decade.  Most people are unaware of what they can do to take control of their health and that is why I thought that this blog would be helpful to many people out there to take their health and their families health more seriously.

Larger portions, larger plates and larger waistlines is what is happening all around us and in order to make a difference we first must start with our self discipline.

So what's the difference between a portion and a serving?

A portion is the amount of each food that you choose to eat or make into a meal or snack where a serving however, is a standard amount of which portion we choose is to be used.  For example a recipe would call for certain amounts of a particular serving where a portion is the size of each particular food that we place on our plate.

Serving sizes are what is based on Nutritional label but unless we read these labels carefully there can be A LOT of deception here.  Most people are unaware of just how much food they should place in front of them and most importantly when is enough food to eat.

So how can we picture what foods we should be eating vs. how much we should be eating?

Simple...it's based on making correct nutritional choices that can be easily portioned into certain amounts that our bodies need.  The increased size of fast food nowadays makes it harder than before to not eat everything we are served and furthermore fast food is not smart decision to get all of the nutritional value that our bodies needs to have a manageable weight.

Be Smart with your Plate Size......

Throughout the years portions and packaged sizes have grown so high that our weight has grown also.  This taxes our organs, raises cholesterol and is very bad for our heart, lungs and overall happiness.

So what can we do to solve this problem?

Don't be afraid to eat off a smaller plate, smaller bowls and even test your self discipline and only eat half of what is on your plate when served at a restaurant.  If you can control your calorie intake then you can control the number on the scale.  It's really that simple.

It also smart to calculate how many sodas, alcoholic beverages or fruit juices your consuming and the size and how many.  This is very important to keep track of because these are empty calories which just spike insulin and glucose levels so high that diabetes has also become a serious problem to many.

The benefits of not being overweight.
